Healthy Snacks for College Students

Get Your Snack On!

As a busy college students, it often seems like there's just not enough time in the day to do all the things I'd like to do. But with proper time management, at least I can usually do all the things that I need to do. And eating a couple of small snacks throughout the day is one of those things.

It may be tempting to skip the snacks, and if you're busy enough sometimes even meals, but trust me, taking two minutes to have a snack now will save you later when you hit the dining hall. Most dining halls are all-you-can-eat style buffets, and most college students are ravenous, sleep-deprived zombies by the time lunch and dinner roll around.

But if you have a couple of healthy snacks throughout the day, you are much less likely to overeat during meals, and much more likely to make healthier choices. Healthy snacks not only help to keep your blood sugar levels in check, but they also allow your metabolism to run more efficiently. In short, eat healthy snacks because they're good for you!

Here are my current 3 favorite healthy snacks for the busy college student

1. Fruit and Almonds/Almond Butter

*Why are almonds so good for you? Check out this list to learn more about the benefits of almonds. Basically, they're just amazing for your overall health.

I love these  packets of Justin's Almond Butter  because it takes the guesswork out of portion control. They're also great for throwing in your bag and taking with you to class or the library.

2. Larabars
Larabars are not only delicious, but they are super healthy. All 19 flavors are made with whole ingredients: unsweetened fruits, nuts and spices. Thats it. Compare that the plethora of other so-called "healthy" snack bars on the market these days.

Most other bars are filled with high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, preservatives, and other nasty gunk that does nothing positive for your health. Larabars, on the other hand, are genuinely healthy because they are made up of simple, whole, natural ingredients. I truly enjoy all of the flavors, but my favorite is Cappuccino!

3. Fresh Veggies with Hummus and Salsa

Craving something crunchy and savory? Not to worry! Just grab some fresh veggies (or steal some from the dining hall salad bar) and your favorite hummus and salsa (I personally love garlic hummus and pineapple salsa) and you've got yourself the perfect afternoon pick-me-up!

The crunch of the veggies with the savory hummus and tangy salsa is sure to kick your cravings to the curb. Who needs salty, processed potato chips when you've got this delicious, filling snack? (Just be careful about your portions: 1 serving of hummus is 2 Tbs, not half the container. But by all means go ham with the veggies-no one ever got fat by eating too many raw vegetables.)
